In the field of tree preservation, selective pruning is often coupled with cabling & bracing of stems.  The pruning first removes excess weight from the stems in question, then the cable and/or bracing adds mechanical support to help reduce the chances of failure in the stem.

Cabling

High-strength cables are used between stems high in the crown to help prevent excessive strain in high wind events that could cause the stems to break. These cables can either be

a) static (cable does not stretch, used for tight, weak branch unions), or,

b) dynamic (cable can stretch, used for relatively strong branch unions where failure would be undesirable or dangerous)

Bracing

Bracing is used at a branch union, usually in the lower sections of the tree. A steel threaded rod is inserted through a drilled hole and anchored with nuts and washers on either end. The brace serves to prevent the weak branch union from splitting under extreme load.  This procedure, coupled with a strong cable up above will add an immense amount of strength to any tree.

Note that cables can be installed on their own, but bracing is almost always done in conjunction with cabling. Every tree and every situation is different.

DISCLAIMER:

Cabling and bracing of trees is intended to reduce hazard potential only. It does not permanently remedy structural weaknesses, is not a guarantee against failure, and requires periodic inspection.
